Akçansa raises alternative fuels to 21,9% in Türkiye

Akçansa reported 21,9% alternative fuels in 2025, up from 20,3% in 2024, with a 35,0% target for 2030 and a 60.000 t/yr RDF project.

Akçansa reported alternative fuel use of 21,9% in 2025 and kept its 35,0% target for 2030 for cement operations in Türkiye.

According to the Akçansa 2025 Integrated Annual Report, the company prioritises industrial waste, treatment sludge, biomass and end-of-life tyres as substitutes for fossil fuels in production.

The report sets 21,9% alternative fuels

The rate increased from 2024, when Akçansa reported 20,3%. The same report chapter presents a 35,0% objective for 2030 as part of a gradual transition in energy-intensive processes.

Akçansa says it continued infrastructure and process improvements for alternative fuel use during 2025. It also reports technical and operational assessments to expand biomass use across different plants.

Biomass and RDF broaden the thermal base

Akçansa reported converting 65 thousand tonnes of biomass waste into energy during 2025. Biomass reduces dependence on fossil fuels when supply keeps adequate calorific value, moisture and particle size for the feeding system.

The report also describes a 10-year strategic cooperation with Akademi Çevre to establish an RDF preparation plant with 60.000 tonnes/year of capacity. The facility began operations in October 2025, according to Akçansa.

The company expects to avoid around 130 thousand tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions during the contract period. The document does not publish kiln-by-kiln RDF operating results or the contribution of each plant to the substitution rate.

Moving from 20,3% to 21,9% is not decided only through waste procurement; it is decided in the thermal stability of the calciner and main burner. As more biomass or RDF enters the mix, the operator must maintain flame temperature, carbon burnout, available oxygen and gas composition without harming clinker or emissions. Localised H₂/O₂ injection in the pyroprocess is analysed at exactly that point: accelerating combustion kinetics around the solid fuel, improving oxygen use in the reactive zone and opening room for waste with variable moisture or volatility. In a plant aiming at 35,0% substitution by 2030, the technical question is whether the system can accept more RDF without increasing CO, losing clinker reactivity or raising kiln variability. The answer requires tests by injection point, flame curve, sulphur chemistry and the real quality of available waste.

What Akçansa has not published

Akçansa has not announced a date, budget or industrial results for a commercial H₂/O₂ solution in its kilns. The report places hydrogen and oxygen research within its R&D projects, alongside CCUS, mineral additions and construction waste recovery.

The publishable figures for now are alternative fuels: 21,9% in 2025, 60.000 tonnes/year of RDF capacity and a 35,0% target for 2030.
